April 18th, 2009 by janelmartin

Our guests have arrived at the Wakefield Inn for our April culinary retreat weekend. There will be four 2-hour classes that are hands-on, and involve a lot of techniques. We will make sauces and soups, bread and tarts, Technorati Profilestuffed pork loin, risotto, lavender creme brulee and chocolate mousse.

All of the meals are provided, and all but one are at the Inn sampling the items that we have made. We pair that with wine on the last evening and enjoy the fruits of our labor as a 5-course meal.

Whenever possible we us local ingredients, and today had a salad with the most wonderful cranberry chevre. It could be eaten as a dessert it is so delicious. Jenny Tapper of Via LacteaFarm and Brookfield Dairy makes the cheese. They make a great excursion during one of the breaks from the kitchen, and are just 5 miles away. They also make their own maple syrup and soap. Right now you can stop by and visit the kids, baby goats that is, they are so cute.

Spring is all around as I watch the perennials emerge from the ground. I love the surprises that spring brings in the garden.

Quilting Weekend at New Hampshire Bed and Breakfast

April 3rd, 2009 by janelmartin

Our semi-annual group of 6 quilter’s are here at the Wakefield Inn Bed and Breakfast and making some amazing items. These ladies arrive on a Thursday afternoon, ussually after stopping at a local quilt shop or at Marden’s Surplus in Sanford, ME. They sit, sew and burst out laughing as they tell stories and enjoy each others company. It is so obvious to me how passionate they are about creating these beautiful gifts from the fabric that they choose.

We offer quilting and knitting weekends and this particular group comes 2 times a year, in April and September, and are in their 9th year here at the Wakefield Inn. They are an insparation for me, as I love all types of fiber arts especially knitting and quilting. They add creativity to the air at our Historic Bed and Breakfast and it seems that the walls are saying ahhhhh as this past art is coming back to stay.

This weekend is their get away weekend for them to finish projects and just relax and be pampered. The weather outside may be wet, but the fire is going and the quilters are sewing.
