December 14th, 2011 by janelmartin

HoHoHo!! Welcome to Wakefield Inn

Oh my, Christmas is just 10 days away, and I do not know about you but I still have some gifts to get.  And of course they are for the people on my list that I just have no idea what to get them.  Okay, so maybe I can’t get away with giving them a gift certificate to the Wakefield Inn but possibly you could.

These can be used for a stay, cooking classes and even on of our summer dining experiences.  We would be happy to customize the certificate for you if you give us a call.  If you  are anything like me though, and it is 12 am in the morning when you do your shopping, we have just added the link for gift certificates to the right side of most pages so it is easy to find now.  We wish you happy shopping, and we wish you and yours the Best this Holiday Season, and a healthy and Happy New Year for 2012.

Wow, has it been a long while since I have written a blog post, so sorry to those who may follow it.  Since our Living Social deal was posted and sold out we have been busy ramping up for all our wonderful new guests and getting all the kinks worked out.

I am also busy working on the spring menus for all the cooking classes and for the Summer Dinners at the Inn.  This year the restaurant will be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and alternating Sundays 5:30-8:30pm.  We will have the 5-course dinner and NEW this year we will offer the option of any 2 for $25.  We are also adding new items to the Wine and Beer list, and will have some great wine from NH’s own Zorvino Vineyard.  More to come on that later so stay tuned….

We have new robes, towels, sheets, and soaps to pamper you during your stay.  I even have these great little rubber ducks with chef hats in our gift shop for $5, just too cute.

We also offer In-Room massage, a great way to enhance your get-away.  I can personally vouch that our masseuses are GREAT!!!! Just contact us and we can help with all you relaxation needs.

Rescue Dog Ace, from Lakes Region Humane Society

June 2nd, 2010 by janelmartin

Last year right before Christmas we adopted a dog from the Lakes Region Humane Society.  His name is Ace and he is just a sweetheart.

Regal Ace

Please let me in!

His is a 4 year old Weimeraner and came to NH from Georgia He is settleing in to his job as official greeter rather well, and wags his tail at all who enter the Inn.  He loves to run in the backyard, and is doing a wonderful job of keeping the squirrels off the birdfeeders.

Ae our Weimeraner
Such a Ham!

He seems to want to make sure he is the center of attention….just check out the picture at the right!!  Whenever I sit and have a chat with someone, he comes over and just lies down, then he rolls over….too funny not to laugh!

He loves all the girls, and anyone who comes to stay.  We found a gem of a dog at the shelter, and am so glad that he now has a home with us.
Oh, and if anyone has any old blankets or pillows, I am happy to take them to the Lakes Region Humane Society for you.  On your next visit the Wakefield Inn, just bring them with you, and I will drop them off.  They are always in need of old towels, and bedding for all the animals at the shelter.  Ace says thanks for helping his friends!!

Wakefield Inn article in New Hampshire ToDo Magazine

May 3rd, 2010 by janelmartin

Hot off the press is the May issue of New Hampshire ToDo, and the Wakefield Innis the featured Inn with a wonderful 3 page article about the Inn, owners and lots of things To Do.  Tim Deal did a great job really bringing across the feel and experience of staying at the Wakefield Inn.  Which for those who have not yet had a chance to check into our comfortable, well appointed guest rooms, the following awaits. Private Baths in each room, library, free WiFi throughout and in the gardens, homemade cookies and fresh fruit, robes, common area for sitting to chat (and the location of the afternoon wine and cheese) and an additional TV room. Oh, did I forget the most important part?

Breakfast is served

Yes, we also have our gourmet breakfast of  seasonal fruit, fresh baked scones (a house specialty) or muffins, and something like a zucchini frittata, omelet or wholegrain waffles with fresh berry compote.  We also have locally roasted coffee from Black Bear Coffee in Tuftonboro, NH and a selection of tea from Portsmouth Tea Company. Fruit juice and warm conversation are also available. Breakfast is served between 8am and 9am, and coffee is flowing at about 5:30am for those, like me, who need a little kick start to your day.

If you are allergic to gluten, soy, eggs, dairy or anything else, or have other dietary restrictions please let us know and we will happily prepare you something equally as scrumptious.

Wakefield Inn Bed and Breakfast, a Green Historic Inn

April 19th, 2010 by janelmartin

As Earth Day approaches the world is looking toward the environment and what can be done to improve on our world. Climate change is a subject we here more and more about, with good reason, it is very important to us all.

My mother, who shares a birthday with Earth Day, has been gardening organically for 65 years, and raised us to appreciate the bounty of Mother Nature and to respect all that she provides.  Being raised on a farm, and being so close to my food source, has pushed me want to provide my guests with the same quality of food that I enjoyed as a child.  Food fresh from the garden, there really is nothing like it!!  The breakfast and dinners we provide are planned with that in mind, though food is not the only part of it.  Here are just some of the Sustainable practices we have here at the Wakefield Inn.

  • Compost all kitchen waste
  • recycle all bottles, cans, paper, cardboard that is possible
  • cloth napkins and no paper plates
  • organic cotton towels
  • linens with low environmental impact
  • changing to low-flow toilets
  • towel reuse program
  • non-petroleum based laundry soaps
  • cleaning products that pass EPA “green” standards
  • CFL lighting
  • landscaping that does not require watering
  • part of winter heat source is carbon neutral (wood)
  • use local whenever available
  • low VOC paints

I am always looking for new ways to do our part for the environment and would welcome any suggestions on ways we can do more.  Our 200 year old home and cash flow limit some big changes we hope to make sometime like converting to renewable energy, so until then we will do what we can.

If you want to see what impact small changes will have on your ‘carbon footprint’ take the carbon challenge….you will be surprised!!

New Sisson room is a first floor guest room.

April 12th, 2010 by janelmartin

We have been working hard to have this room ready for the spring.  We tore the room down to the studwalls, and rebuilt what is there now, keeping the original golden pine floors, and the bee-hive fireplace with the wonderful original mantel, and exposing the hand-hewn beams in the ceiling.  Though we have kept many great things from the past, some modern features have been added like a vessel sink, tile floor and independent bathroom heater to name a few.

Snuggle in for the night.

This room will have a flat-screen tv on the wall, and soon to come, a whirlpool tub to relax after a long day of enjoying the White Mountains or kayaking on Lake Winnipesaukee. The queen bed is set to be able to view the gardens and the fire’s glow as you drift off to a deep slumber.

 The Sisson room is named after Lou and Harry Sisson,  previous innkeepers who did so much for the community and for the former guests who stayed here.  Over the years we have heard many great stories about Mrs. Sisson and her amazing amount of energy and ability to get so much accomplished. Harry died 2 years ago and Lou passed away earlier this year;

New bathroom

still needing a name for the room, it seemed only appropriate that their name adorn the new room.  Lou Sisson worked hard on turning the Inn into a bed and breakfast in the mid-80′s, and did hours of research to name all the rooms after prominent people who had something to do with the community or the Inn. We hope for many years to come the Sisson room will give people the warmth and hospitality that Lou and Harry showed to all of the people who came through the doors from 1986-2002.
