June 25th, 2010 by janelmartin

For those who love music, and especially when performed in an outdoor setting with a view, look no further than Great Waters Music Festival.  Every summer under an acoustical performace pavilion, set on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire; Great Waters Music Festival attracts regional and national artists for concerts and even a folk festival.  The pavilion can seat up to 800 people and all seats have an unobstructed view of the stage.

Come help kick off their 16th year!!

This year starts off with “Pops Celebrate America” on July 9th at 8:00pm.   Conductor Peter Mansfield and the Great Waters Pops Orchestra will present favorite patriotic and American music, and of course the always popular 1812 Overture.  July16 will be the John Pizzarelli Quartet, a Tribute to Duke Ellington for those jazz fans out there.  Coming on July 23, The Ultimate Doo Wop Show, The Drifters, Vogues and Marcels sounds like a fun evening.

In August, the month starts out with Eliza Gilkyson & Cheryl Wheeler on Friday, August 13.  Next up will be the annual Benefit Dinner and Auction on August 19.  An evening of food, music and a singing auctioneer to fund the continuation of the Great Waters program into the future as well as scholarships. Then finally the 9th Annual Great Waters Folk Festival on Saturday, August 28 from 2:00pm-11:00pm.  Spend the day enjoying such artists as Aztec Two Step, Red Stick Ramblers, Mindy Smith, Anais Mitchell and many more.

Food, Fun and Feel Good!!

If you do not want to travel with you bike, no worries.  The Nordic Skier has rentals avialable for both road/performance and mountain biking.  They are located right in Wolfeboro and are near the Cotton Valley trail. They have maps available for trails in the area, and after a long bike ride you can cool off at the town beach or get an ice cream at Bailey’s Bubble.

Want a little more adventure!!  Try mountain biking at Back Country Excursions just over the border in Maine.  A full day of guided trail riding is $40pp and they have 18 miles of trails.  They also offer bike rentals for those who travel to the area from far away.  They even include lunch for the all day rides, though half day is available.

Leave the details to us.  Just put in the notes that you want to rent a bike and what type (mountain or road) and we will have it waiting here for you.  We can even pack you a healthy lunch/snack and some of our great water.

Mother's Day in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire

April 29th, 2010 by janelmartin

Being a mother of three girls, I am always aware of all that is offered for Mother’s Day in the area.  I always only want one thing; a day, undisturbed, to garden.  I hope for a perfect sunny day, but if not I still go out and work in the soil to feel more in touch with Mother Earth.  I guess I get that from my mother, who has always gardened, and has a greenhouse business and sells her vegatables at the Wakefield Farmer’s Market that opens on Memorial Day.

If the weather is too rainy, I head to my Mother’s greenhouse and give her my gift, free labor!!!  I get to enjoy the warmth and color inside pretected from the elements, and again I get my hands in the dirt.

For other mothers out there, here are few events happening around the area of the Wakefield InnM/S Mount Washington is offering a champagne brunch. Cruises leave the Wiers Beach Pier at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  Cruise Lake Winnipesaukee while enjoying some food and entertainment.

See a play at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Laconia, on May 9th they are doing A Year with Frog and Toad, great for the whole family!!

For the more adventerous moms out there, take a trip to Loncoln, and ride the zip-line for free.  With the purchase of a full-priced ticket, moms get the thrill for free on Mother’s Day.  Contact Alpine Adventures for more info.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, and however you choose to spend your day, may it be filled with happiness and love from your family.

Cardboard Box Derby at King Pine great fun for kids.

March 18th, 2010 by janelmartin

King Pine Ski Area in Madison, NH is holding their Cardboard Box Derby on March 21st from 12pm-4pm.  Bring a creatively decorated cardboard racer for two or four people and race down a special course, even bring theme music and they will play it while you race the course.  Sounds fun!!  This seems like a blast for the family to do this weekend, get some fresh air and enjoy time together.  Prizes will be awarded for speed, appearance and durability; so head on down to the local appliance store and see if they have a few refridgerator boxes hanging around.  Grab the kids and some craft paint and have fune creating a masterpiece to fly down the hill.

This weekend there is also an Open House E. T. Hines Mercantile in Sanbornville.  The shop is just a mile from our Inn and they have a great selection of home decor and gift items.  This is a great place to put together a gift basket for Easter or Mother’s Day and the staff is very helpful if you need some suggestions.  The entry price for the Open House on March 20-21 is a bag of non-perishable food to be donated to the local food pantry.

While you in the area pick up some New Hampshire Maple Syrup at one of the many sap houses all around the state. If the steam is rising from the sap house they are open, March 27 and 28 is NH Maple Weekend and the sap houses are open for tours, they have tastings and fun activities.

Gingerbread house of Wakefield Inn B&B

December 2nd, 2009 by janelmartin

Front of InnI entered the Stonegate Manor gingerbread contest, and pictured is my entry.  It was so much fun playing around with various types of candy. Making a replica of the Inn really challanged me to think outside the typical gingerbread fixings and find solutions for realistic looks.

I used red confectionary coating and cut out pieces for shigles for the roof.  Hot Tamales for the bricks, and even used fish crackers in the pond and the water was made of sugar.  The lattice is spagetti dipped in white chocolate.

Next year we will have a kid’s gingerbread making class, and have fun creating a great take home work of art.

NH Open Doors Weekend November 7-8

November 3rd, 2009 by janelmartin

NH Open Doors is a weekend for all who love handcrafted items and who wish to meet the artists and craftspeople in their own environment.  What fun to take a tour of a studio, and see what they are working on.  The website has a map with all the locations throughout the state.  Plan to make a day of it and visit some wineries and restaurants in between artisans.

Locally, Susann Foster Brown  has etchings of Rural NH scenes and hand-spun yarn.  She is just minutes off of Route 16.  Why not pick up a little hand-spun yarn and knit up something nice for a gift for Christmas.
